2024 New York Championship
CHAMPIONSHIP RULES
The NYISC and Anya Katsevman are proud to present to you the first annual New York Championship. We are very excited to produce this event for you and create a unique competitive experience that will help you take your dancing to the next level. This championship is going to be like nothing you’ve ever seen before, so if you’ve thought about competing this is a good time to start and if you’ve competed before, we encourage you to read all of our rules and categories carefully because they are brand new.
1ST DIVISION
The Palladium Freestyle Competition
Rules
The Palladium Freestyle Competition will include the following dances:
- Salsa
- Bachata
- Cha Cha
In the future, we look forward to including more dance styles, so be sure to keep checking our rules as we evolve.
This year we are happy to offer you Salsa, Bachata, and Cha Cha, and you will be able to participate as a Soloist, as a Couple, and as Pro-Am.
The competition will be held with a high emphasis on musicality and the dancer’s ability to use the music. Each entry will include several songs in the given dance style to see who moves forward to the next round. We will offer age denomination, however, all categories are open and you can only register once. The intention is to create a more competitive environment and more fairly compare and contrast contestants, as all contestants will be on the floor at the same time per division.
The judges will be hand selected based on their ability to properly evaluate quality of movement, artistic interpretation, and mostly the dancer’s rhythmical ability to use each song.
For the Palladium Freestyle Competition you do not need to have a choreography prepared. Music will be randomly selected for each division by our expert DJ. For each genre you register in, you will be asked to dance to more than one song so we can properly evaluate your ability to use the music. For example, if you register to compete in “Salsa Soloist” you may be asked to dance a Mambo followed by a Salsa Romántica. For example, if you register to compete in “Bachata Couple,” you will be asked to dance to a traditional-style song as well as one that is more sensual.
You are encouraged to improvise, however, you can come prepared in whatever way you wish. We encourage you to study all types of music and we encourage you to enter all the genres we offer.
The judges’ responsibility is to narrow the field by progressing you to the next round until we reach the final. The number of dancers in the final will be determined based on how many competitors sign up. You can expect to dance multiple times per division if you are recalled to the next round.
You can expect to dance on the floor at the same time as everyone who registers in your division, and then be selected to pass to the next round.
Everyone being on the floor at the same time allows the judges to compare you to your fellow competitors. Therefore, you will be ranked with a placement (1st, 2nd, 3rd, etc.) instead of being given out points.
Dance costumes are encouraged but not required. Props of any kind are not allowed. Dance shoes are required. Sneakers of any kind are not allowed. Even if they are Dance Sneakers, sneakers will not be allowed. Formal aesthetic is required. Casual attire will not be permitted.

This will allow the judging panel to clearly compare each entry.
You can participate in this showcase division as a Soloist, Couple, or Team. Everyone will compete against each other.
The song we have selected for this year is Un Verano Nueva York by El Gran Combo.
Feel free to create an edit of your choosing, ranging anywhere from 1:30 to 3:00 minutes in length.
